Purpose is an abiding intention to achieve a long-term goal that is both personally meaningful and makes a positive mark on the world.
In today’s fast-paced world, the concept of purpose is often thrown around in self-help spheres, business seminars, and even everyday conversations. Phrases like "find your purpose" or "live a purposeful life" are commonplace, but what do they truly mean?
The word “purpose” can be both inspiring and overwhelming. There is overwhelming pressure from Society that we have to know our purpose and live it. The pressure for individuals to define their purpose is a way to validate their existence which in turn can make people feel inadequate if they cannot pinpoint their "purpose."
There is a critical distinction between purpose, potential, and goals. Is purpose just another trendy buzzword, or is there a deeper significance behind purpose? Are goals and plans synonymous with purpose, or is there an inherent difference? Can you have a goal without purpose, or is a goal just that a goal?
Is purpose just one of these words that we say to look knowledgeable?
One way to reframe purpose is simply living and enjoying life. Instead of a destination or an accomplishment, purpose is viewed as a journey.
Looking at purpose is about enjoying life as much as you can for as long as you can. When seen with this perspective it is freeing, allowing you to focus on living authentically rather than being burdened by societal expectations.
In business, purpose is often defined in terms of measurable outcomes and impacts. The question often asked is what is your "why" which is supposed to help business owners to define their goals and targets.
However, when applied to personal life, living and finding joy is sufficient.
Over the last few years, the word purpose has become a trendy concept within the coaching and self-help industries. You cannot be a coach unless you can fling purpose about and get people to find out what their purpose is. This trendiness can dilute the true meaning of purpose, turning it into a commodity rather than a deeply personal journey.
Purpose is inherently personal and varies greatly from one individual to another. Everyone is unique and this goes for purpose too. Your purpose is personal, as it comes from inside of you as a human. Knowing that purpose is unique to you, can help demystify the concept, reinforcing that what matters to you and your unique perspective on what gives your life meaning. Purpose is not a one-size-fits-all approach.
Simply being alive and living is a purposeful life. This brings comfort and liberation, as it implies that every person's life has inherent value and meaning, irrespective of grand achievements or clearly defined purposes.
When you dance, your purpose is not to get on the floor. It's to enjoy each step along the way.
Wayne Dyer
This quote articulates the essence of living with purpose, not as a final goal to be reached but as a series of moments to be savoured.
Living with purpose is about enjoying the process rather than obsessing over the outcome. It's about being true to yourself and finding joy in everyday moments.
The quest for purpose can often feel like a monumental task prescribed by societal norms. However, living a meaningful life doesn’t require defining a grandiose purpose. Instead, embracing the journey, finding joy in each moment, and living authentically are what truly give life its purpose.
Shift from seeking purpose as a destination to appreciating the dance of life itself.
